Vintage Greek Icon “Virgin of Tenderness” • Hand-Painted on Aged Wood with Real Gold Leaf
This Greek icon was born in a humble Thessaloniki atelier where master painters still pray each brushstroke before it touches the wood. Using egg-tempera and 23-karat gold, they recreated the Tender Mercy type—known to devout collectors of greek orthodox icons as the most intimate vision of the Mother of God: Mary presses her cheek to the Christ Child, silently echoing the psalmist’s promise, “He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge” (Psalm 91).
Hold the panel and feel its history: grooves of a chisel, layers of linen gesso, faint Greek lettering, and the soft glow of gold leaf that once reflected vigil lamps. Every surface scratch or worn corner turns this into one of those storied greek icons you see kissed by the faithful in mountain chapels.
Flip it over and a multilingual certificate states:
“This hand-made icon, painted on old wood with real sheet of gold, may lawfully be exported from Greece.”
A simple jute cord lets you hang the icon the moment it arrives—perhaps above a prayer table where you recite your favorite psalm, or amid other Greek orthodox icons in a home sanctuary. Wherever it rests, this piece whispers the ancient greeting: “Χαῖρε, Κεχαριτωμένη”—Rejoice, O Full of Grace.
